Brandeis chapter

The Riverdale Chapter of The Brandeis National Committee is hosting a meeting Riverdale Temple, West 246th Street and Independence Avenue, at 12:30 p.m.

The guest speaker will be Mina Crasson, a dramatist and historian, whose topic will be “Abby Sawyer, Woman of the American Revolution — How the Lives of Colonial Women Were Changed by the Revolution.”

Bagels and light refreshments will be served and a boutique, “Silver Jewelry by Lea Dunner” will be displayed for sale.

This event is open to the public.

Advance reservations are encouraged and can be made by sending a check for $12, payable to B.N.C., to Cecile Horwich, 5800 Arlington Ave., Apt. 10W, Bronx, N.Y. 10471, by Wednesday, Nov. 11. A subscription at the door will be $15.

Landscape exhibit

The Riverdale Art Association will meet at the Atria, located at 3718-3726 Henry Hudson Parkway, at 7:30 p.m., where landscape artist Rebecca Allan will discuss her work.

Her work has been recently been included in Wave Hill’s “Arbores Venerabiles” exhibit. Ms. Allan is described as a New York-based painter whose work encompasses landscape, the figure and themes of music.

The community is invited and admission is free.

Hadassah meeting

The Riverdale Atria, located at 3718-3726 Henry Hudson Parkway, will host the next meeting of the Riverdale and Bronx chapters of Hadassah at 1:30 p.m. in the Media Room.

The special guest of honor will be Helen Weiss Pincus, award-winning journalist and teacher in schools and teacher centers, who will give a talk entitled “How Anyone Can Learn to Write.” Refreshments will be served.

Book club

Congregation Shaarei Shalom will hold its next book club at 8 p.m. in Congregation Shaarei Shalom’s new sanctuary, located at 5919 Riverdale Ave.

Infidel, by Ayaan Hirsi Ali, will be discussed.

The author was born in Somalia and raised in several African countries, according to Shaarei Shalom, during a period when they came under increasingly strict Muslim rule. Ms. Ali’s collaboration with Theo Van Gogh, the famous film director, led to his assassination and death threats for her powerful feminist critique of Islam, organizers say.
