‘Jenny’s Penny’

The Riverdale YM-YWHA, located at 5625 Arlington Ave., presents Jenny’s Penny, at 2 and 7 p.m.

The play, written and composed by January Akselrad, is based on the children’s book The Wishful Penny by Jennifer Jo Young, and is directed by Ben Becher with choreography by Emily Walton.

While visiting her Grandma, a rare coin collector, Jenny learns the history of one very special 1943 wheat-ear copper penny. As she listens, Penny’s journey unfolds and so does a unique wisdom that can easily apply to anyone, according to the Y.

Each performance features a book signing by Ms. Young.

The program will be repeated Thursday, Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m.

Klezmer concert

The Metropolitan Klezmer Quintet headlines a pre-holiday “Klezmer-Fest” at The Whitehall Club Ballroom, at 3333 Henry Hudson Parkway, at 2 p.m.

General admission tickets for the concert, which is open to the public, are $18 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under. The ticket price includes a kosher dessert buffet.

To order tickets, bring or mail a check payable to Whitehall Tenants Corp. for the exact amount of tickets ordered to the Whitehall Management Office, 3333 Henry Hudson Parkway, Bronx, NY, 10463.

Tickets will be held at a willcall desk on the day of the show; doors will open at 1:30 p.m.

Palisades talk

Wave Hill, located at West 249th Street and Independence Avenue, presents a nature talk, “The Unknown Palisades,” on the grounds in the Wave Hill House, at 1 p.m.

Through images and narrative, Eric Nelsen of the Palisades Interstate Park Commission will tell the story of the Palisades.

He will teach about the villages that once dotted the shores, the palatial estates that arose on the summit, the struggle to preserve the cliffs, the work of the New Deal agencies during the Great Depression and the oasis the park has become.

The talk is free with paid admission to the grounds.

Orchestra plays

The Four Seasons Symphony Orchestra, led by Maestro Gregory Singer, will perform works by Mozart, Brahms, Copland, Gershwin and others, including some American musical favorites, at Lehman College’s Lovinger Theatre, located at 350 Bedford Park Boulevard West, at 2 p.m.

Among the highlights will be a performance of “Rhapsody in Blue” by prize-winning pianist Olga Vinokur.

The orchestra’s mission is to give concerts of well-known classical and popular music at affordable prices. Its performers and soloists are graduates of some of the world’s best music schools, and will tour China later this year.

Tickets cost $5 for students, $10 for seniors and $15 for the general public. Parking is free at the college.

Annual bazaar

The Van Cortlandt Jewish Center, located at 3880 Sedgwick Ave., will hold its annual indoor, non-religious bazaar and carnival from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

There will be raffles, a silent auction, vendors, kosher food, free prizes for children, door prizes, magic shows at noon and 1 p.m., carnival games and crafts, and bric-a-brac.

Free concert

The second in a series of free concerts will be held at Riverdale Presbyterian Church, located at 4765 Henry Hudson Parkway, at 5 p.m.

The Bardekova Ensemble, featuring Ellen Bardekoff, oboe; Carolyn Clark, horn; Daniel Hane, bassoon; Monte Morgenstern, clarinet; and Richard Paratley, flute, will perform works by Ellington, Danzi, Ibert, Rossini and others. The concert will be followed by a reception catered by Gladys Bart-Williams. The public is invited and can pay a “free-will offering” if they choose to.

Ethiopian crafts

Riverdale Temple, located at 4545 Independence Ave., will display Ethiopian crafts available for purchase at the Riverdale Temple Holiday Gift and Craft Sale, from 9 to 3 p.m.

Handcrafted decorative covers, mezzuzot, note cards and other items will be sold. The proceeds will go to help poor Israelis from Ethiopia. Other items, crafts, jewelry and hand-made items will also be sold, including CD’s, DVD’s, small electronics, jewelry, household items, toys, books, games, bric-a-brac, antiques and more.

Admission and parking are free; refreshments will be available.

Family art

Wave Hill, located at West 249th Street and Independence Avenue, presents a family art project, “Harvest Time Hangings/Decoraciones del otoño,” from 1 to 4 p.m., on the grounds in The Sally and Gilbert Kerlin Learning Center.

Participants will gather fall leaves, cones, pods and seed heads. Then, they’ll weave them together with other materials to create a decorative wall hanging to celebrate fall.

The program is free with admission to the grounds.
