I enjoyed your article - well done. Henri Cru was also a member of the Horace Mann football team with Jack. Jack, having learned Henri was French and that Henri's father, Albert Louis Cru, was head of the French Department at Teachers College Columbia Univeristy, approached Henri after practice one day and introduced himself. Jack spoke Canadian French not "proper" French' as Jack put it, and thought Henri might teach him. From that moment they became lifelong friends. Henri, as Mr. Sampas writes, figured as a significant character in Jack's On The Road and as Deni Bleu in Lonesome Traveler and others.
