A guide to the Bronx DA race

Posted

DARCEL CLARK (D)

Why she is running: “I’ve been asked to serve. I think it’s a very important job to do. I have the qualifications to do it. I think that’s the most important thing.

“My goal and my vision is to make the Bronx district attorney’s office the best in this city and in this country. So that’s my vision and I’m going to do everything I can to make that happen.”

How she would improve the Bronx’s rate of convictions: “The Public Integrity Office is [her proposal] because there is a need to make sure I have a specialized unit to deal with those cases when I come in. It’s not a response to anything. It’s something that’s needed in the Bronx, as it is in every other county.

“[DA staff will] know who the victim is. They’ll know the police. They will know what additional information comes in on the case. They will have it from beginning to end.”*

How she would prevent delays like those leading to Kalief Browder’s suicide from happening again: “The Kalief Browder case is a tragedy. And no one should have to sit in jail for three years on a robbery case or any type of case. And if I’m elected DA, again, with those internal controls that I expect to institute and the vertical prosecutions, nothing like that will happen.”**

How she would deal with crime committed on Rikers Island: “It’s a very volatile place. Not having been in the DA’s office in years to know exactly what’s going on, I can’t speak to it. But as district attorney, you better believe that I will meet with all of the key stakeholders in that operation.”

Her alternatives for non-violent offenders: “Job training, mental health counseling, drug treatment.”

How she would combat jail overcrowding: “Prioritizing cases, ensuring that cases are brought to trial in timely manner… There need to be some reforms on bails.”
