District 10 Community Education Council Vice President Terry Moss said he believed the accident that killed Rylee could have been prevented if traffic safety measures had been in place.

“An accident can always be prevented, but normally nobody does anything about it until it happens, that’s the sad thing about it,” he said. “It’s just too bad that it’s only being addressed now that there’s a tragedy.” 

He called for a police presence to crack down on cars disregarding the new “No Standing” signs on Eames Place, as well as security cameras in the area.

Help from the community has been a blessing for the family, Ms. Leon said. Donations to a GoFundMe page set up after the accident exceeded the $6,000 needed for Rylee’s funeral and burial. 

“At a certain age, you start saving money to send your kid to college. You do not save money to bury your children,” Ms. Torres said.

“We would not have been able to do that without any help,” Ms. Leon added.

Ms. Leon hopes more people will volunteer to direct traffic around the school until official measures are in place.

“We rely on [the volunteers] to keep our kids safe,” she said.
