Arthomas “Romo” Smith, a longtime resident of Riverdale, died Oct. 26 in his home. He was 86 years old.

Mr. Smith lived much of his life in Netherland Gardens, where he was known as a man of great wisdom.

“He was a father to many fatherless young men,” Gregory McNeil, a longtime friend, said. “When I was a teenager, everyday he gave me advice.”

Mr. Smith spent his early years in Dothan, Alabama, the 13th of 14 children, but left for New York when he was very young, Mr. McNeil said.

Mr. Smith served in the Pacific theater in World War II, lying about his age so that he could sign up when he was only 16.

On his return, Mr. Smith taught himself photography and set up a shop at West 258th Street and Riverdale Avenue. He later became a realtor and had a store selling men’s clothing on Johnson Avenue.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife Cathy; son Arron (Dawn); granddaughters Shardonia, Nene and Aasha; stepson Anthony (Regina), and his children Nicole, Brit and TJ; several nieces and nephews and many friends.
