Robbery of the week

1. An assailant wrestled a man to the ground and beat him with an unidentified object, before robbing the victim of a smartphone and other valuables in an Aug. 20 attack, police say. The victim, 51, was walking opposite 119 W. 225th St., when another man approached him and demanded money and his wallet. When the victim refused, the perpetrator dragged him to the ground and beat him, before taking $1,200 in property, including a $1,000 iPhone.

This case is open to detectives.

Tough week to try getting away

In four cases this week, citizens and intended victims did not just report crimes – they caught suspects in the act.

2On Aug. 20, an 87-year-old man walked into his home at 3865 Cannon Place and saw a strange man in his bedroom trying to make off with $1500 worth of jewelry, police said.

The 87-year-old called the police, and although the 22-year-old suspect tried to flee, officers apprehended him in the area.

3On Aug. 18, a woman’s car was stolen while she was visiting her father’s home near W. 234th Street and Broadway.

She went looking for the car and found it parked at a McDonald’s just a few blocks north, across the street from the 50th precinct.

She got inside and drove away before reporting the incident to police, officers said.

4. A couple at home on Delafield Avenue had a similar encounter while sitting on their backyard deck on Sunday.

The couple heard a loud bang from outside their home at 6122 Delafield Ave., and when they went to inspect, they found a man trying to break into their 2005 Chevrolet with a rock.

The 23-year-old suspect fled the scene, but was chased and caught by police shortly thereafter.

5Finally, a bouncer at a nightclub at 5676 Broadway called police at 3:28 a.m. on Sunday, when a woman he tried to keep from driving hoped into her car anyway.

Police say the bouncer tried to stop the 26-year-old, who insisted she was waiting for her friend to come pick her up.

When she got into her car, the woman could not even get out of the parking lot at 5676 Broadway, before police stopped her as she was trying to turn onto the street.

A Breathalyzer test later that night showed the suspect’s blood alcohol levels at .135, police said.

All of these cases are closed due to arrest.
