Convicted nurse loses license after delay

Posted

After nurse Nanic Aidasni spent six months in prison for sexually abusing a 64-year-old resident of Manhattanville Health Care Center on West 231st Street, you might have thought he would lose his license.

But Bronx state Sen. Rev. Ruben Díaz Sr., who led rallies calling for justice over the 2014 case, was surprised to discover otherwise last month.

“What is going on at the New York State Nursing Board if a convicted rapist can slip through and remain in good standing, placing our family members and loved ones at risk?” Rev. Díaz wrote in his Sept. 15 letter to constituents, called “What you should know.”

It appeared that was all it took for the New York State Nursing Board  to revoke Mr. Aidasani’s license. That is what the senator claimed in a Sept. 24 interview.

“After the column, the nursing board worked on it,” said Rev Díaz, a member of the Senate Committee on Aging, “and now his license has been officially revoked.”

However, the New York State Education Department’s website still has Mr. Aidasani listed as a registered Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in Jersey City, New Jersey.

“It’s possible they have his certificate in their hands and they failed to change the website,” explained state Sen. Kemp Hannon, chairman of the Senate Committee on Health.

“Non-doctored medical professionals should be subject to discipline by the education department,” he added.

Rev. Díaz said he plans to see if there are other nurses who should not have their licenses.

Concourse plan gains steam

Northwest Bronx Councilman Andrew Cohen pledged his support for “Complete the Concourse,” a new plan from the non-profit Transportation Alternatives (TA).

“Complete the Concourse promises life-saving improvements such as protected bike lanes and curb extensions to arguably the busiest thoroughfare in the borough,” Mr. Cohen said in a statement. “I am confident that these enhancements will improve the safety of everyone utilizing the Concourse and I look forward to working with TA to make sure they are implemented.”
