Authorities arrested a suspect in the Feb. 23 hit-and-run killing of Daniel Cabrera, 38, at the intersection of West 225th Street and Broadway early Tuesday morning.

Michael Longo, 58, pled not guilty in Bronx Supreme Court to one count of leaving the scene of an incident without reporting, a class D felony.

“Longo is accused of mowing down and leaving the father of one for dead in the intersection,” a press release from the Bronx District Attorney’s office read in part.

The suspect is alleged to have then fled the scene southbound over the Broadway Bridge in a light silver Dodge Magnum, which police later recovered in Upper Manhattan.

After the incident, Mr. Cabrera was taken to New York Presbyterian Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to police.

Two to seven years

If convicted of the charges, Mr. Longo could serve from about two to seven years behind bars.

The incident was caught on surveillance cameras outside a liquor store at the intersection and had been under investigation by the NYPD’s collision investigation squad and the 50th Precinct.

“We did our job,” said Deputy Inspector Paul Rasa, commanding officer of the 50th Precinct. “It’s a serious incident and we made the arrest on this guy. Now it’s up to the DA to do their work.”

Mr. Longo previously served 17 years for a January 1985 conviction of attempted murder in the second degree. In the same case, he was convicted of criminal use of a firearm in the first degree, criminal possession of a weapon and assault in the first degree. All charges were felonies, but they will not influence the outcome of the current case.

“This does not make him a predicate felon because the prior felonies were penal law,” said a spokeswoman for the Bronx District Attorney’s office. “The current felony is under the VTL [vehicle traffic law index].”

Vision Zero

The spokeswoman said that the case against Mr. Longo was one of several the Bronx DA was currently trying under laws drafted as part of Mayor Bill de Blasio’s Vision Zero Initiative to reduce traffic fatalities.
