Dolphins lacrosse entered losing situation with winning mentality

Posted

Going into a game, a team has a pretty good idea how the score is going to go. They base their hypothesis on past experiences and game statistics. Even if a team believes it cannot beat its opponent, it is important to go in fighting.

That is what the College of Mount Saint Vincent (CMSV) women’s lacrosse team did on Saturday, when it went up against Saint Joseph’s on Long Island and lost, 18-5.

Despite knowing that they were not going to beat Saint Joseph’s, the Dolphins came into the game with the mentality that anything could happen, and proved that by scoring the first goal only 36 seconds into the game. Kelly Fraser scored on an assist from Laura Carr.

While CMSV only held the lead a short time before the Golden Eagles took over, the Dolphins did the best they could in a losing battle.

During a blowout, the winning team sometimes takes the opportunity to pad their statistics.

The Golden Eagles, however, played with grace. When they have a big lead, Saint Joseph’s slows its game down. They make a rule to have a certain amount of passes before shooting and cap how many goals they score.

Saint Joseph’s head coach Bob Vlahakis has won six sportsmanship awards with past teams. With the Golden Eagles, he has proven that those awards were well deserved.

Losing a game is hard enough, but when the winning team shows no mercy, it is disheartening and frustrating for the losing team.

By halftime, the Golden Eagles were up 15-4, but the Dolphins came in with as much energy in the second half as they had in the first.

Melina Mezzanotte and Fraser each scored two goals, Carr had three assists and I made 11 saves. Katie Coyle also had a goal. Fraser leads the team with 17 goals this season.

The Dolphins (3-6, 1-3 Skyline Conference) travel to The Sage Colleges in Albany for their next game on Thursday, and will play host to The College of Old Westbury on Saturday.

Kaitlin McCormack is the starting goalie for the College of Mount Saint Vincent women’s lacrosse team.
