Eagles soar to second win, Govs and Knights fall short

Maybe it’s time to break up the Fieldston Eagles.

OK, Fieldston head football coach Gus Ornstein laughed at the thought, but after meandering through a winless 2015 season and losing nine straight overall, Fieldston’s 41-12 rout of Rye Neck last Saturday gave the Eagles two straight victories to open the 2016 season and that is something to get excited about.
“I like this better,” Ornstein quipped.

Josh Godosky did a lot of the heavy lifting for the Eagles (2-0) as he rushed for 56 yards on seven carries, caught four passes or 53 more yards and scored three touchdowns as the Eagles wiped out an early 12-6 deficit by scoring the game’s final 35 points.

“It was kind of back and forth in the first half,” Ornstein said. “We jumped out first to lead 6-0 and then Rye Neck scored two [touchdowns] in a row and went up 12-6.”

Behind Godosky’s scores, Fieldston led, 20-12, at the half but just after halftime, and for the second time in two games, the Eagles scored on their first possession of the second half when quarterback Jesse Cooper-Leary teamed with Kyron Thomas on a 75-yard touchdown toss to put the Eagles up, 27-12 and the rout was on in. A little later in the quarter, Fieldston recovered a Rye Neck fumble in the end zone for another score to up its lead to 34-12 and “it was kind of over from there,” Ornstein said.

The victory gave Fieldston back-to-back road victories over a pair of Section I Westchester programs to open the season.

“Two road wins in Section I are just two great wins for us,” Ornstein said. “We’re really excited about it.”
Cooper-Leary had a strong day, finishing 9-for-10 on passes for 161 yards and a touchdown.

Fieldston will look to make it three straight wins on Saturday when the Eagles host People’s Prep of New Jersey in their home opener.

Flushing 10
Clinton 6

The long trip out to Queens became an even longer trip home for the Governors after dropping this contest. Clinton (1-1) was down 10-0 at the half but managed to pull within four points in the fourth quarter when Kameron Walker scored on a short touchdown run. But that was as close as the Governors would get. Jailen Nias led the Clinton defensive effort with a team-leading seven tackles, including one tackle for loss and a sack.

The Governors will travel to Canarsie for a third straight road game on Saturday. Kickoff is at noon.

Brooklyn Tech 22
JFK Campus 20

Kennedy saw its record fall to 1-1 with the loss in Brooklyn. Tech quarterback Michael Marcovici threw for one score and ran for another and the Engineers rushed for 144 yards in the game to help secure the win.
Kennedy will have its home opener Friday night at 7 p.m. when the Knights host South Shore High School from Brooklyn.
