Edward Hearne was Boy Scout leader

Edward “Ned” Hearne Hitchcock passed away after a brief illness on July 31 in Bloomington, Indiana. He was a leader at Riverdale’s Boy Scout Troop 240 during his time in New York.

Edward was married to Frances Mae Cady in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania in 1966.  Frances passed away in New York in 1998.

Mr. Hearne was born in Philadelphia on June 5, 1941 to Edward Dickey Hitchcock and Florence Hearne Hitchcock.  He spent most of his youth living near Philadelphia.  He graduated from Swarthmore College in 1964 and received a master’s degree in social work from Bryn Mawr College in 1968.

He was a social worker in New York for 30 years. During that time, he was active with Troop 240.

Mr. Hearne moved to Knoxville, Tennessee in 1999 and continued to work as a social worker until his retirement.  He spent a few years living in Athens, Ohio and then moved to Bloomington.

He was active in his church, as well as Alcoholics Anonymous, and enjoyed helping others.  He was an avid reader who also enjoyed woodcarving, gardening and volunteering.

A memorial service was held on Aug. 8 at United Presbyterian Church in Bloomington. 

He is survived by his sons, Edward Cady Hitchcock (married to Kimberly, grandchildren Lila and Edward) and John Harrison Hitchcock (married to Christine, grandchildren Zachary and Abigail), and brother, Nicholas Fithian Hitchcock.
