Engel joins drive to aid homeless students

Rep. Eliot Engel and the Coalition for the Homeless are collecting school supplies  for the more than 21,000 students in the city’s homeless shelters.

You have until Friday, Sept. 12 to drop off everything from backpacks to pencils at Mr. Engel’s Riverdale office, located at 3655 Johnson Ave. or his Co-op City office, located at 177 Dreiser Loop, Room 3.

After participating in the drive for years, Mr. Engel said in a statement he expects this year’s haul to be the biggest yet.

“This is a wonderful cause that I am always proud to be a part of,” Congressman Engel said. “Year after year I ask my constituents to donate everything from backpacks to number 2 pencils, and year after year I am blown away by the response. The people in my district are incredibly giving and it is through their kindness that thousands of under privileged kids are given the tools to succeed academically.”

As the nation’s oldest advocacy and direct services organization, the Coalition for the Homeless works to help homeless families by conducting a variety of social service programs, including a summer sleep-away camp, an after-school program for homeless children, as well as a mobile soup kitchen. For more information on “Project: Back to School” please call the coalition’s hotline at 212-776-2112 or e-mail them at Backtoschool@cfthomeless.org.
