Get rid of Broadway eyesores

Posted

To the editor,

Thanks to Councilman Andrew Cohen and the Andrew Cohen and the Kingsbridge Riverdale Van Cortlandt Development Corporation for thinking about how to move forward with planning the area near the West 242 Street subway stop (“Rival plans look at North Broadway anew,” Jan. 14). From my perspective, the area would be most improved by:

• Building a large public parking garage within a block from the subway, perhaps on the site of Burger King or on the strip of public parking just south of the BK.

• Using eminent domain and/or developer incentives to completely tear down and redevelop the entire block of businesses (where the Dunkin’ Donuts currently is located) as well as the Burger King and its parking lot. Perhaps as mixed-use developments with retail on the ground level and housing above. Right now, those two blocks are huge eyesores and they are the first things visitors see when getting off the subway.

• Figuring out how to get northbound traffic flowing more smoothly, so that buses don’t block lanes and there are at least two free northbound lanes.

• Having a signage ordinance to prevent ugly signage, like many pretty town centers do.

Thanks so much.
