Henry Hudson Parkway to close for paving project

A $4 million state project stands to transform the infernally uneven surface of the Henry Hudson Parkway into a veritable highway to heaven.

On Monday, the state Department of Transportation (DOT) began work to pave every lane of the heavily trafficked highway from Kappock Street to the city limit.

Workers will strip all the asphalt along the 3.5-mile-long route, replace the concrete underneath and apply a new layer of asphalt, with completion scheduled for the end of June.

The DOT said northbound sections of the highway will be completely closed to traffic from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. during the project. Once the northbound lanes are complete, the same thing will apply to southbound lanes. The DOT added, “intermittent single-lane closures during off-peak hours will also occur.”

Community Board 8’s Transportation Committee Chairman Michael Heller greeted the project as “excellent news.”

“We are very happy that they are doing the project at this time,” he said in a phone interview.

Mr. Heller credited the northwest Bronx’s Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz and state Sen. Jeff Klein with prevailing upon the state to approve the project.

“The Henry Hudson Parkway is extremely important to the residents of the Northwest Bronx, and the roadway needs to be well maintained,” Mr. Dinowitz said in a statement. “I’m pleased that NYSDOT is paving the Parkway so early this spring, providing for a smooth ride throughout the upcoming summer driving season.”

Calling the parkway “a lifeline for residents of the Bronx and Westchester and the thousands of commuters who use it on a daily basis,” Mr. Klein said, “Repaving the parkway will not only make the ride smoother for our local drivers, but also improve their safety and security while traveling.”

Mr. Heller noted that last year, the state paved Saw Mill Parkway from Yonkers Avenue to just north of the city line, where that parkway meets the one running through Riverdale.

“This has been a very aggravating anomaly to Riverdalians and other people, and it will end now,” he said.
