Horace Mann 13
Newark Academy 12

With the Lions playing without starting quarterback Marc Murphy for a second straight week, Horace Mann got key contributions from Billy Lehrman and Ben Metzner as it squeaked out their second win of the season.

After Newark took a 6-0 lead on their first possession of the game, the Lions (2-1) responded with their touchdown early in the second quarter after the Lions’ Teddy Keegan blocked a Newark punt to set up Lehrman’s one-yard scoring run for a 7-6 lead. But Newark answered with another touchdown just before halftime to take a 12-7 lead into the intermission.

The game remained that way until four minutes remained in the fourth quarter but that’s when Metzner scored on a seven-yard run to give the Lions the lead for good and they held on for the victory.

Horace Mann will host Hopkins on Saturday at3 p.m. at Alumni Field.

Clinton 34
Canarsie 6

Think the Governors were a little annoyed at their performance in last week’s narrow loss at Flushing? Unfortunately for Canarsie, the Chiefs were in the wrong place at the wrong time as the Governors took out a week’s worth of pent up frustrations and buried Canarsie on the road.

Clinton rolled up 380 yards in total offense with 312 of those yards coming on the ground as the Governors jumped out to a 20-0 halftime lead and were never threatened by the overmatched Chiefs. Quarterback Luis Ortiz rushed for 151 yards and two touchdowns, Jaron Johnson added 99 rushing yards and a score and Benjamin Gibbs added another scoring run for Clinton. Ortiz also threw for one touchdown, teaming with Charlie Baez on a 36-yard scoring toss.

The victory upped the Governors record to 2-1 as they prepare for their first home game of the season when they host Curtis High School of Staten Island at noon on Sunday.
