Inak, Bronx Science sweep JFK golfers

Nabila Inak lofted a tee shot that would have made Tiger Woods jealous.

The ball stopped dead inside of five feet from the cup on the 132-yard, par-3 third at Mosholu Golf Course on Oct. 9. Rather than admire her shot, Inak, a Bronx High School of Science senior, noticed a teammate’s tee shot had landed on the green of the adjacent second hole. So she whipped out a camera from her bag and ran over to snap some photos.

After she captured the moment, she walked down to the green to tap in for birdie.

Inak and her Bronx Science teammates — Tracy Tan, Aurora Lee, Jessica Eng and Hannah Telt — swept the Kennedy campus to remain undefeated (8-0) on the season. The Wolverines have not lost a regular-season match since Oct. 4, 2012, a span of 18 matches, and Inak, a three-year captain, has been the consummate leader during that time.

She is also one of the city’s best golfers. In May, PSAL held a co-ed individual championship for the first time, and Inak won the event by shooting a 6-over 79 at Split Rock Golf Course in Pelham. She also tied for second place at the girls individual championship last fall and has won numerous Metropolitan PGA events.

“Nabila’s been playing a long time and is very committed and dedicated to the game,” said Bronx Science coach Daniel Collins. “She practices all the time. In the offseason, she’s constantly playing in tournaments and always working on all aspects of her game. She’s the definition of a leader.

Keeping it interesting

“She’s always involved in everything. We play Monday through Friday, but she’ll organize times on the weekend where they meet at a course and play. It’s almost like having a second coach on the team.”

PSAL dual meets are match-play style on nine holes, meaning the player who wins five holes first takes the match. Inak, Tan, the Wolverines’ No. 2 player, and Lee (No. 3) generally win their matches in five holes, so they keep things interesting by playing against each other rather than the competition.

“It helps keep the tension so we can treat it as a competition,” Tan said.

Inak and Tan both reside in Forest Hills, but they have followed very different paths in golf.
