It only takes a foot of snow to turn the Bronx into Aspen

A foot of snow blanketed the neighborhood just as the weekend began, giving residents plenty of time and opportunity to get out, whether on foot or strapped to skis, and enjoy the winter wonderland.

Ewen Park, with its monstrous hill, was not surprisingly the hub of snow activity on Saturday. Bundled-up children hopped on tubes, tobaggans and even snowboards to cruise down the slope toward Riverdale Avenue. Among those enjoying the day was Marble Hill resident, Zena Humphrey, who was waiting at the bottom for her family to come zooming down.

“I used to do it when I was a child,” she said, adding that it’s a fun and inexpensive way to spend the day. “This is the best activity,” she said.

Over in Van Cortlandt Park, several ski enthusiasts grabbed their poles to tour the trails or the Parade Ground.

Ana Alexeeva said the last time she donned a pair of cross-country skis was 20 years ago with her father, in Russia. The cold didn’t seem to bother her.

“I like the weather because it’s Russian weather,” she said.

Fifteen-year-old David Ojeda and his friends were exploring the snowy trails of Vannie. But before he could hit the hills and sled with his friends, he said, his parents told him he needed to shovel in front of his house. —Reporting by Marisol Diaz
