The Rich-ards get richer

The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) announced this past week that Manhattan College senior forward Shane Richards was selected to the All-District 1 First Team following his senior season.

Richards, who played his high school ball at York Prep in Manhattan, ranked in the top six in several categories in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Association (MAAC) this past season, including finishing fourth in the MAAC in scoring with a 17.2 points-per-game average. He placed second in the conference in free throw percentage (85.9 percent), was second in minutes played (36.3 minutes a game) and finished sixth in three-pointers-per-game at 2.5 per outing.

Richards also eclipsed the 20-point mark in 11 different games this past season, led the Jaspers in scoring 15 times and logged double-digit scoring efforts 27 times. Richards finished his career with 1,472 points, good for eighth-best all-time in Manhattan basketball history while also setting Manhattan a single-season record in three-pointers in a season (92) and a career (312).

Richards was joined on the First Team by Iona’s A.J. English, Stony Brook’s Jameel Warney, Monmouth’s Justin Robinson and Brett Bisping of Siena College.

Playoff push

The Lehman College men’s volleyball team had a weekend to remember when the Lightning swept a City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) multi-match at York College last weekend. Lehman downed the College of Staten Island, 25-22, 25-16 and 25-17 in its first match before taking down Medgar Evers, 25-12, 25-18 and 25-20. The two victories helped Lehman (5-10 CUNYAC) to clinch a spot in the CUNYAC playoffs which begin with the quarterfinals on Tuesday, April 5 against an opponent to be determined.

Washed away

The start to the Public School Athletic League (PSAL) baseball season was a no-go on Monday as rain Sunday night and Monday morning left local fields unplayable and forced the cancellation of the season openers for Clinton, Kennedy, American Studies, Bronx Science, Riverdale/Kingsbridge Academy and IN-Tech Academy.

The locals was scheduled to give it a go again on Wednesday, March 30 when Clinton will travel to play defending PSAL AAA champion George Washington at 4 p.m. while Kennedy will face Bronx Science at Harris Field No. 1 and American Studies will take on Morrisiana at Harris Field No. 5 also at 4 p.m.

RKA will host Stevenson at 4 p.m. on Wednesday while IN-Tech will have to wait until Monday, April 4 for its opener when it hosts Smith at Van Cortlandt Park.
