Police say a 39-year-old man was shot and killed in an apartment at 4582 Manhattan College Parkway on Monday night.

Jorge Luis Vargas, who lived in Upper Manhattan, was pronounced dead on Tuesday morning after sustaining gunshot wounds to the head and torso. It was the second murder so far this year within the confines of the 50th Precinct.

About 20 people — apparently the victim’s family and friends — gathered outside of the apartment building on Tuesday afternoon. Many of them sat in groups on the curb or on steps, crying and comforting each other. Others leaned on parked cars, talking in low voices. A uniformed officer guarded the door, while about five detectives stood by.

The victim’s sister found his body on Tuesday around 11 a.m, according to a building resident who did not want to be identified.

“I called 911 at 11 o’clock this morning, because I heard this woman screaming and crying, really loudly, really distressed in the street, but she was, she wasn’t speaking English so I didn’t know why,” the resident said.

“They had four [police] cars here, a fire truck and an ambulance in like five minutes or something, really fast,” the resident added.

“I went down to find out what was going on and they wouldn’t tell me, they just told me she was okay,” the resident continued. “But then my neighbor downstairs, who lives on the same floor [as the victim] was standing outside, half the street was out, and he saw that somebody was murdered.”

“That’s when I asked the detectives, and they said yeah, the brother was murdered,” the resident said. “So it turned out the guy who lived in that apartment whose name I don’t know… apparently was shot about eight o’clock last night and his sister came around 11 o’clock this morning and found the body.”

The resident added that a neighbor told her he thought he heard a gunshot around 8 p.m. Monday night.

Police said there have been no arrests so far and the investigation is ongoing.
