Meter scam alleged

To the editor:

Watch out for this meter scam. On Nov. 18, I parked my car on West 231st Street. I paid the meter and taped the receipt to the windshield of my car with the front facing forward so anyone could see it from the outside. This is what I always do.

I thought nothing of it until about a month later. Then I received notification by mail that I had an unpaid ticket for $35. Evidently, the traffic agent did not put the ticket on my windshield because he or she knew that I would simply get it dismissed by sending in the receipt.

I appealed by mail anyway and asked that the person who gave me the ticket be investigated. The judge simply ruled that since I had not kept the receipt, I had no evidence. He or she raised the fine to $45. Guilty until proven innocent.

I now save all my receipts. Since our government is unscrupulous when collecting money from the people it is supposed to serve, this serves its interests in two ways. First, they collect extra revenue from people guilty of nothing. Secondly, when people have extra time left on their receipts, they can no longer give them to other drivers. We must keep the receipts for our own records.
