Mistaken about Montefiore

Posted

To the editor:

Now that the Montefiore plan for a health center is off the table, it might be a good time to see what actually happened and why (“Montefiore scraps plans for Riverdale facility,” March 18, 2015).

The fact is that the people of Riverdale, especially the elderly, were denied access to a convenient medical facility by a group of people who apparently were more concerned with property values than with people values. Or maybe it was the fact that many of the direct care workers (techs, aides etc.) are people of color and that same group didn’t want to wait with THOSE people at the bus stop.

The Montefiore plan may or may not have affected property values negatively. But it most certainly would have made modern medical care closer to home for those sick and elderly Riverdalians who have to take long bus rides to reach such facilities.

Someday that parcel will be developed and who knows for what purpose. Perhaps a methadone clinic would be a good use.

Bottom line: In community planning and development, the devil you know is better than the devil you don’t know and I can think of 100 less desirable occupants for that parcel than a community health clinic.
