The city’s Emergency Department urged New Yorkers to prepare for winter weather that is expected to hit the city at the end of the week, bringing snowfalls, biting winds and sub-freezing temperatures.

Rain was expected to start around midnight Thursday, changing to snow in the small hours Friday, the city Emergency Management Department said in a statement Thursday afternoon, citing the National Weather Service.

About 3-5 inches of snow are expected to fall on the city, with heavier snowfalls in some areas. The heaviest period of snow is expected between daybreak and mid-morning Friday, and may affect the morning commute, the Emergency Department said, urging New Yorkers to exercise caution when driving, walking or biking and to allow for additional travel time.

“We are also expecting extremely cold temperatures this weekend, so check in on your family, neighbors, the elderly, or others with increased health risks to make sure they are protected from the extreme cold,” NYC Emergency Management Commissioner Joseph Esposito added in a statement.

Temperatures Friday night are expected to drop into the teens, after staying in the 30s during the day, the Emergency Department said. On Saturday, temperatures will remain below freezing, with chill values close to zero. Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing Sunday, with highs near thirty degrees and lows Sunday night around twenty degrees, before rising slightly to the mid-thirties on Monday, the Emergency Department said.
