New digs and a club for KRVC

Between a new club and a new office, things are bustling at the Kingsbridge Riverdale Van Cortlandt Development Corporation (KRVC).

The organization held a grand opening for its 505 W 236th St. location last week. The event was also the first party for Club KRVC, a new group that will host cultural happenings.

The event was, like the venue, small and intimate, with attendees scattered throughout the office-turned-club and backyard. Michelle DeAngelis provided the tunes, while guests — who had to be on a list to get in — munched on Mediterranean food.

“We were in a different location that wasn’t accessible to the public for a long time,” said KRVC’s Executive Director Tracy McCabe Shelton. “As we started to get into the space, we noticed that we had this platform that is actually covering pipes so we can’t get rid of it and we also discovered the backyard, which is an amazing space.”

Then a proverbial light bulb went on.

“We said we can have more than an office; we can also have a club. So we are trying it,” Ms. McCabe Shelton said. “We have things planned, we have this and we have Thursday evening and Sunday afternoon to be our club hours.”

In addition to the opening day festivities, KRVC has an array of upcoming events including a magic show, a movie screening and more live music.

“We are trying different things to see what works,” Ms. McCabe Shelton said.

Guests at the June 16 party received email card invites, and there was a rope barrier and staffer checking a list of names by the entrance.

“The cards are free. It’s free to attend, but we just ask that people come and get a card just because it is tight here,” Ms. McCabe Shelton said. “And, you know, it makes it clubby,” she added with a smile.

She indicated that the character of Club KRVC is still taking shape.

“We are more open to the community than just an office,” Ms. McCabe Shelton said.

According to www.krvcdc.org, upcoming events at Club KRVC include a magic show on Sunday, July 10 and a screening of the film “And Then The Climate Changed” on Thursday, July 21.
