Nora Marie (Buckley) McShane died on June 1 at St. Peter’s Medical Center after a short illness. She was 81.

The East Brunswick, N.J. resident was the daughter of Irish immigrants and mother of four children. Born and raised in Manhattan with four brothers, she moved to New Jersey to raise her family with husband Jack McShane in 1961. She was active in local politics, serving on the township Board of Health and Zoning Board, and worked as an administrative assistant at the Rutgers University School of Education before her retirement. She was honored for her charity work with the St. Vincent de Paul Society, which provides food and other services for those in need, and helped launch the annual Walk for the Poor fundraiser. She was a devoted wife, loving mom, and doting grandmother, never afraid to offer her opinion on any subject, her family said.

“Her fundraising prowess dates back 40 or 50 years,” said her son Damian McShane, a Riverdale resident and former chairman of Community Board 8. “She was the problem solver of her world … She was always there for everyone in the family.”

She is survived by her spouse of 61 years; daughter Maura and sons Lawrence, Sean and Damian; brother Michael (Buddy) Buckley; and her nine grandchildren. She was predeceased by her father, Michael, and mother, Sara, along with her brothers Thomas Toolan, Thomas Buckley and Robert Buckley.

A wake will take place on Tuesday, June 4, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. at the Rezem Funeral Home, 475 Cranbury Road in East Brunswick, with a funeral mass at St. Bartholomew Roman Catholic Church in East Brunswick on Wednesday, June 5,  at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society through St. Bartholomew at 470 Ryders Lane, East Brunswick, N.J., 08816.
