Report: woman raped on Broadway

A 28-year-old woman was allegedly raped twice on Broadway between West 242nd and West 251st streets in the early hours of Saturday.

The victim told detectives she was leaving Riverdale Market around 2:30 a.m. when a man approached her and told her he had a knife, according to a report on News 12 Bronx. A spokeswoman for the 50th Precinct declined to comment for this article, citing the sensitive nature of the case.

After the victim bought an apple at Riverdale Market at 6029 Broadway, a man allegedly forced her to walk several blocks to a construction site at 6155 Broadway and raped her there. The woman told detectives the man then brought her to 6065 Broadway, an apartment building, where he raped her again.

The suspect was described as around age 25, 5-foot-10 and 190 pounds with a mohawk and an earring.

A clerk at Riverdale Market said a colleague observed the woman make a purchase on Saturday, but did not notice anything else.

A superintendent for the apartment complex at 6035 Broadway said he had seen police up the block around 6 a.m. Saturday morning.

“I’m in shock right now,” a resident of 6065 Broadway said upon learning of the attack on Monday. She wanted to be identified only by her first name, Mari.

“Basically this is a quiet neighborhood, this is a quiet building,” she added, saying she has lived in the building for almost four years.

The police did not give any information about the exact location of the attack, but 6065 Broadway has two staircases that go under the building. One staircase leads to a dark hallway and back up to a space behind the apartments.

Mari said even though she feels protected in the area, she is wary of those staircases and checks them out from above whenever she leaves early in the morning for work.

“Because I see a lot of police presence, I feel safe. But I always have my guard up. It’s the Bronx in me,” she said.

Anatoliy Kruk, the construction supervisor for an affordable housing project at 6155 Broadway, said he learned about the alleged rape on Monday morning.

Mr. Kruk, who works for the Stagg Group’s construction company, said he leaves the lights on overnight and the site is locked when workers are not present. He added that no one could enter the site unless they jump a fence.

“After people leave, I have a security guy who goes around to check all the different sites to make sure everything is locked up,” Mr. Kruk said, adding that the worker stops by at 9 p.m. at the latest.

He also voiced surprise at the violent crime, saying, “This is a nice area.”
