Republican leaders are bigots

To the editor,

Anti-gay bigotry, like all other forms of prejudice, is never restrained by logic, fairness and common sense. Republicans gave examples of this with their reaction to the U.S. Supreme Court ruling legalizing gay marriage.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee said, “The Supreme Court can no more repeal the laws of nature and nature’s God on marriage than it can the law of gravity.” Gravity is a fact.

It is also a fact that some people were born with a stronger desire for those of the same sex. It is also a fact that many (I suspect most) straight people occasionally see someone of the same sex they think looks good enough to turn gay for, just as there are gay people who occasionally feel that way about someone of the opposite sex. It is a fact that some people are turned on by many people of both sexes. The lovers of the mayor’s wife were females before she fell in love with Bill de Blasio. So unlike gravity, heterosexuality is not something that effects humans 100 percent of the time.

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal is supposed to be one of the most intelligent, well-educated and competent Republicans. Yet he said the court’s ruling “will pave the way for an all-out assault against the religious freedom rights of Christians who disagree.” So by not allowing anti-gay marriage Christians to restrict other people’s freedom, you are restricting their freedom?

Sen. Ted Cruz was born in Canada but insists he can run for president even after numerous people in his own party falsely claimed President Barack Obama was not born in the United States and therefore could not be president. He said the ruling marked “some of the darkest hours of our history.” Really? It’s right up there with 9/11, Pearl Harbor, the burning of the White House in the War of 1812 and the Civil War? Now I think Cruz becoming president would be up there with those events.

What’s even more outrageous is that these people call themselves conservatives. Conservatives are supposed to believe in keeping government off people’s backs. Yet they constantly use religion as a justification to do just the opposite.
