Riverdale Y gives cops a muscle-building gift

By Tommy Hallissey

The Riverdale YM-YWHA is helping 50th Precinct police officers stay fit for duty.

A recent upgrade to its fitness facility left the Arlington Avenue center with a host of extra equipment. "We had so much equipment which wasn't bad or old, but we weren't using it," said Lisa Bruskin, fitness and wellness director at the Y.

So, Y administrators thought they could assist local men and women in blue by donating the goods.

Five-O officers came by the Y on April 25 to pick up the equipment, which included five benches, one lat pull down, straight bars, curved bars, a roman chair, free weights and dumbbells.

"They cleaned out the whole gym on Friday," said Ms. Bruskin. "It was a sight. It was like Venice Beach."

The 50th Precinct has a gym in its basement, and officers had been looking for new machines and items. "The gym had really old equipment," said Mindy Ramos, community affairs officer at the precinct. "It is definitely appreciated."

Ms. Bruskin said she was glad the Y could give back. "Everyone is really excited that we gave this to someone who helped us," she said. "They do a lot of patrols around our area at night which is great."
