Say no to Johnson judgeship

Posted

To the editor,

Bronx District Attorney Robert Johnson’s low conviction rate means he’s failed to effectively prosecute criminals and/or he’s prosecuted many innocent people. His slowness at bringing cases to trial means that defendants (some of whom are innocent) who cannot afford bail spend a lengthy amount of time at the Rikers Island jail. His recent refusal to prosecute any more Rikers Island assault cases means that inmates are encouraged to attack other inmates and correction officers. So Assemblyman Marcos Crespo loses all credibility when he says Johnson has “excelled” at his job.

As for Darcel Clark, the Democratic Party candidate to succeed Johnson, I hope she’s as good as Charles Moerdler claims (“Darcel Clark will make a great district attorney,” Oct. 8). But if she is, she should have been running against and replacing Mr. Johnson long ago. Certainly his pitiful performance does not earn him a judgeship.
