Skateboard park coming to Vannie

At a Community Board (CB) 8 Parks and Recreation Committee meeting on Nov. 6, about a dozen young skateboarders comprised an informal advisory panel and offered their suggestions for a new skate park in Van Cortlandt Park.

“I made a real effort to make sure we had skateboarders because... we were lacking in skateboarding expertise on the committee itself, to put it mildly,” said chairman Bob Bender.

The park will occupy a paved but currently unused site south of Vannie’s stadium.

William Harris, a landscape architect who is designing the skate park for the Department of Parks and Recreation, said that department is working with a skate park consultant. The exact design for the new facility is still up in the air.

Mr. Bender said the skateboarders in attendance approved of preliminary plans.

“We had a good exchange between designers and skateboarders, and the design got praise from the skateboarders,” he remarked.

Once the design goes through the public design commission next month, the Parks Department will put out a bid for contractors.

Mr. Bender estimated the park will be ready for skaters by 2016.
