Some thoughts on equality in the United States today

To the editor:

It seems we are trying to form the perfect society, in which every occupation, every facet of society is perfectly represented by its percent of the total population. So if African Americans make up 12 percent of the population, they will have that percent of those with a bachelors degree, master’s degrees and Ph.d.s. They will make up that percent of our society who are physicians, dentists and lawyers. They will have that proportion in income level and home ownership.  I do not mean to pick on African Americans, because this also applies to Hispanics, whites and Asians.

It does not matter what standards must be relaxed to achieve this noble goal.  What is paramount is that we are all treated fairly irrespective of ability and inclination. It is only then that we can all feel that American society is perfect. That no group or individual is slighted.
