Sophie L. Pieloch was WW2 nurse

Sophie L. Pieloch, 94, a longtime resident of Yonkers passed away at her brother-in-law’s home in Pinehurst, North Carolina. 

Born in Manhattan on Feb. 22, 1920 to Bronislaw and Rozalia (Lazarezyk) Pieloch, she grew up in St. Adalbert’s Parish in the South Bronx. A graduate of Kings County Hospital Center School of Nursing in Brooklyn, she obtained her bachelor’s of science in clinical teaching and supervision and her master’s in nursing service administration from St. John’s University.

During World War II, Ms. Pieloch served in Europe with the Army Nurse Corps.  She was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries received during the Battle of the Bulge.  She spent over 30 years of her nursing career with the Veterans Administration Nursing Service.  She held clinical and administrative positions at the VA Medical Centers in the Bronx and Manhattan; West Haven, Connecticut; Hines, Illinois; and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

In 1976 , she retired as chief of medical service at the VA Medical Center in Philadelphia. From 1976 to 1979, she was a field representative with the joint commission on accreditation of hospitals. In her retirement, Ms. Pieloch indulged in her love of reading, music, opera, theatre and travel. 

A communicant at St. Margaret of Cortona Church in Riverdale, she served in various offices of its Leisure Club, including president.

Ms. Pieloch was preceded in death by her sisters Blanche, Helen Roan and Ceslava Wernet and her nieces Rose Marion Schultz and Theresa Smith. She is survived by her niece Mildred (Kenneth)  Boyd, nephew Stephen (Sandra) Wernet  and brother-in-law William Wernet.  She was a loving great-aunt to five and a great-great aunt to eight.

She will be reposing on Monday, Jan. 19 from 2 to 5 p.m. at Riverdale-on-Hudson Funeral Home, at 6110 Riverdale Ave. Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 20 at 9:45 a.m. at St. Margaret of Cortona Church. Interment will be at St. Raymond’s Cemetery.
