Stella fight grows beyond K'bridge and the Bronx
By Kate Pastor People used to rallying together on West 237th Street have started targeting the likes of Goldman Sachs and taking their case to City Hall to save the cookie company from being sold to an unsavory buyer, they say. A nearly yearlong strike by about 130 bakery workers ended July 7, when Brynwood Partners at once offered workers their jobs back and said it planed to close the factory in 90 days because it was too costly. Since the strike ended, the Stella D’oro Worker Support Committee that formed around their cause has said it believed Brynwood was in talks with Lance Inc., a North Carolina- based food company, in hopes of selling off the historic brand and moving production. Goldman Sachs has funds invested in Lance, organizers say, which is what brought them to Broad Street last week. Stephanie Pillersdorf of Sard Verbinnen & Co, a public relations firmed hired by Brynwood two weeks ago, declined to comment on the possibility of any negotiations taking place, and, as of Monday, Steve Kindred, a member of the Stella D’oro Workers Support Committee, said he believed Lance had pulled out of negotiations in response to the group’s pressure. Even further south, in Washington, D.C., Rep. Eliot Engel spoke from the House floor, scolding Brynwood for threatening to close the factory in October. He implied, in testimony posted on YouTube, that the decision was made by Brynwood in retaliation for a National Labor Relations Board ruling which found it to have acted in bad faith and required it to take the workers back or face owing them mounting back pay. On Tuesday, the City Council’s labor committee voted to approve a resolution — introduced by city Councilman Oliver Koppell and Speaker Christine Quinn — to keep the factory and the job that go with it, in the Bronx. By hiring a public relations firm Brynwood is also reaching out to the public more than before. The company that for nearly a year declined to return calls for comment sent out the second of two press releases last week.
