Victory on the Palisades

Posted

This week’s agreement between LG Electronics USA and a range of groups, activists and elected officials marks a major victory for the region.

LG’s move to halve the originally proposed height of its headquarters on the Palisades means the view of the scenic cliffs won’t be marred by a gigantic corporate structure.

The question might arise, how important is a view, anyway?

The Palisades are not imporant just because they offer a beautiful vista for people on this side of the Hudson River. Being able to see the ancient topography puts us in touch with nature and helps make Riverdale what it is.

Whether rushing to work on the Metro-North train or struggling in other parts of the rat race, the Palisades are always there to give us not just a panorama, but perspective. Somehow, gazing at those timeless cliffs can bring the quotidian into sharper focus.

Being in touch with the Palisades and the Hudson is one of the main parts of Riverdale’s identity. We are constantly striving to protect and improve the nature around us, from Riverdale Park to the ozone. We won’t let a nearby natural treasure become just another exurb.

The outcome with LG also serves as a lesson to other developers. In short, stay off the Palisades. While many worried that the electronics giant’s headquarters portended more construction, the successful activism shows that companies have powerful grassroots forces to contend with if they want to do construction in the region.

Devotees of other causes can take heart from the outcome with LG. Whether it’s the project to develop the Hudson’s Bronx shore or efforts to fight pollution from trains, activism can work.
