Identity songs

Riverdale Temple, located at 4545 Independence Ave., will offer a class taught by Herb Greenhut as part of Riverdale Temple’s Adult Education program, from 7:30 to 9 p.m.

Mr. Greenhut will teach four classes on “Popular Song and American History,” which will meet Wednesdays. This first class will cover popular and folk “Songs of the Great Depression.”

The following week’s topic will be “Songs of Identity.” Mr. Greenhut will look at songs of the civil rights, feminist and gay rights movements, as well as songs of ethnicity and regional pride.

College congrats

The Kingsbridge Heights Community Center, 3101 Kingsbridge Terrace, will hold a “Night of Recognition” from 6 to 8 p.m. to acknowledge the accomplishments of local high school seniors who have been accepted to college. The center’s College Directions Program has provided college counseling through workshops and individual counseling to over 600 middle and high school students in the Bronx, including over 90 high school seniors entering college in the fall. The majority are first generation college students from low-income families. Most of the students have overcome various personal, academic and financial obstacles in pursuit of their goals. The event is free and open to family and friends of graduates.

Rail trip

Riverdale Chapter 1546 of the AARP will sponsor a trip on the Essex Steam Train and Riverboat in Essex, Conn.

The trip will also feature lunch at the Griswold Inn, also in Essex, which is one of the oldest continuously operating inns in the nation.

The fee is $84.50 per person and includes travel by motor coach, all tips and taxes.

Tree walk

Wave Hill, located at West 246th Street and Independence Avenue, will host part of its Magnificent Trees Walking Series, “Off the Beaten Path–Secret Trees of Wave Hill,” at 1 p.m.

Participants should meet at Perkins Visitor Center to get an insider’s view of the gardens with Horticultural Interpreter Charles Day.

The tour repeats Saturday, June 13 and is free with paid admission to the grounds.
