CARTER BURDEN GALLERY ANNOUNCES THREE NEW EXHIBITIONS BY RE-EMERGING OLDER ARTISTS

Posted

Three new exhibitions featuring the unique artwork of re-emerging older artists will be on display February 14 – March 13, 2019 at the Carter Burden Gallery, located at 548 West 28th Street #534 in Manhattan. The Carter Burden Gallery showcases the vibrant, cutting-edge and transformative art that is the product of the unique cultural wealth possessed by older professional artists.

The East Gallery will feature the exhibition Animal Instincts by Vija Doks and Jeanne Goodman. In this exhibit, Doks depicts luminous animal figures in her paintings created with chalk, colored pencil, and oil on a black background. Her pieces showcase the diversity and beauty of animal life, while emphasizing the fragile position of animals in today’s man-made environment. Doks’ past work has been on display the Brooklyn Parsonage Latvian Center, NYU's Small Works Shows, Exit Art, CurateNYC and Hudson Guild.

In her first exhibition with the Carter Burden Gallery, Goodman introduces colorful, lively drawings from her series Creatures of the Book. These large drawings are inspired by the folktales of Goodman’s childhood, where each animal embodies human qualities. Goodman’s work is part of the permanent collection of the National Association of Women’s Art at the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University.

In the West Gallery, the exhibition Domestic Fictions features artist Peter Malone who uses oil and acrylic paint on canvas to create images of objects that imply the presence of an external figure. Each image is accompanied by a phrase that contributes to a larger narrative. Although the figures are absent in these selected works, their impression is evident in objects like a lone coffee mug, the shadow of a window shade, or a lit candle. Malone’s work has been on display in exhibition across the United States and internationally, including the Butler Institute of American Art, Blue Mountain Gallery, the Painting Center, Gallery Henoch and Pratt Institute.

For the On the Wall: Point of Least Resistance exhibit, Robert Petrick presents a 60x120 inch painting titled “Jumpstart”. As part of his new series, Petrick’s piece shows that when lines connect and overlap, they create a mysterious mass, which often happens in nature. To Petrick, these lines are evocative of how life works. Born in 1945, Petrick, a self-taught artist, has been pushing the medium of painting for over 45 years.
