Child escapes would-be kidnapper

Quick thinking may have saved a 10-year-old boy from becoming a statistic after a reported kidnapping Friday morning while on his way to school.

The boy, whose name was not released by police, was walking in front of the Rite Aid at 3824 Kingsbridge Ave., when the alleged kidnapper pulled him into a gray van at around 8 a.m.

The suspect drove nearly a quarter mile to 3817 Bailey Ave., where the boy found a way to escape the van and run to the 50th precinct house on Kingsbridge Avenue, according to police.

There the boy was shown pictures of potential suspects before he positively identified his kidnapper, who police say is a registered sex offender.

The suspected kidnapper was arrested later that same day, but police are withholding his name while charges are pending.
