Don't wait to sack bags

You write that single-use plastic bags are terrible for the environment — which they are — but we should not ban them until we find alternatives that can be used by shoppers who don’t drive.

This problem has already been solved by cities across the country, including Boston, Chicago, Washington and all the big cities in California, where single-use plastic bags are banned statewide.

Pedestrian shoppers in these cities use a variety of reusable bags from compact cloth bags to recyclable synthetic bags that can fit in a pocket.

There is no excuse to delay phasing out single-use plastic bags and ending the damage to the environment that they cause.
