Engel talks Trump this weekend

Posted

How is the Trump presidency affecting the Bronx? U.S. Rep. Eliot Engel wants to know, and he’s ready to answer questions about a Trump world at the same time.

He’ll meet with Northwest Bronx Indivisible Sunday, June 25 from 2 to 4 p.m., at the Riverdale-Yonkers Society for Ethical Culture, 4450 Fieldston Road.

Although the meeting is open to the public, there is limited space, and those wishing to attend are encouraged to reserve seats by emailing bronxindiv@gmail.com. Walk-in attendees will be admitted as space allows.

Engel is the ranking member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, and a member of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. He’ll address a number of issues, including U.S. security and foreign policy, the recent testimony of former FBI director James Comey, the Russian investigation involving the Trump White House, and efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act, among others.

Northwest Bronx Indivisible is one of nearly 6,000 groups nationwide, according to a release. It was organized earlier this year by residents of Riverdale, Kingsbridge and Norwood to resist Trump and his agenda. The group currently boasts 200 members in not only Engel’s congressional district, but also the district served by U.S. Rep. Adriano Espaillat.

Cohen earns kudos

The Northwest Bronx Democrats have had a change of heart when it comes to Councilman Andrew Cohen.

The group, which represents Democrats in Kingsbridge as well as Fordham, Bedford Park and Norwood, have given an endorsement nod to Cohen for the first time in his (so far) unopposed re-election bid. The group stayed away from Cohen’s first race in 2013, believing he would “not take their neighbors issues seriously.”

“Since then, Mr. Cohen has worked with community groups in Bedford Park and Norwood to help re-beautify the neighborhood,” the group said in a release. “He has strongly advocated for keeping the Mosholu medium dogwood trees at Mosholu Parkway despite city opposition.”

Cohen and his staff also have become regulars at the Bedford Mosholu Community Association, the 43-year-old group that represents both Bedford Park and Norwood.

“He had to earn our vote,” Northwest Bronx Democrats board member Norma Jean Scully said in a release. “He has now achieved that.”

Espaillat joins prominent caucus

U.S. Rep. Adriano Espaillat has only been in Washington for a few months, but already he’s finding himself in leadership roles with some of Congress’ influential caucuses.

Espaillat is now the freshman representative with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. The job will allow him to assist the minority whip, communicating many of the legislative priorities of the caucus to the larger Democratic caucus.

The group was founded in 1976, crafting policies that impact the Hispanic community, according to a release. It’s designed to address issues affecting Hispanics in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
