A new tenant is about to move into the 5740 Broadway shopping center.
Kabuki will set up shop there in early 2018. The restaurant known for its hibachi, sushi and Asian bistro fare, will be located between BJ’s Wholesale and the Stop & Shop grocery store. That’s according to Jason Richter, managing partner at Hudson, a commercial real estate group specializing in retail, who worked on the deal.
“It’s exciting because (Kabuki’s other locations) are in some pretty high-profile malls throughout Westchester, and it’s the first location in New York City,” said Daniel Alvarez of Storage Deluxe Realty, the 5740 Broadway developer. “I think it’s unique because they picked the Riverdale/Kingsbridge area as opposed to some other tenants that I have pursued … that go to Brooklyn or Queens. It‘s pretty unique for our property, and to the corridor itself.”
It took a combination of demographics and just the right income levels from its potential customer base to convince Kabuki owner Peter Ling to open here, Richter said. It also didn’t hurt that the shopping center was easily accessible, and quite visible from major thoroughfares.
Even better, this particular location is one of the few shopping centers in the city with a parking lot, Richter added, meaning it’s easier for hungry customers to visit.
The Kabuki lease runs for 10 years with options to extend even longer for the 18,000-square-foot space. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. It’s part of a small chain of restaurants with various names, including Little Buddha, Buddha and Okinawa.
It’s not affiliated with other Kabuki restaurants in other parts of the country, including a small chain in California.
Kabuki’s menu is expected to include a sushi bar for up to $15, and a house special teriyaki at $20. There also will be a kid-friendly menu with chicken, shrimp or steak teriyaki or tempura, for $9.
Kabuki joins other eateries in the general Kingsbridge vicinity like Buffalo Wild Wings, Chipotle and Smashburger.
CORRECTION: The new Kabuki restaurant planned for 5740 Broadway will be in the general vicinity of other eateries like Buffalo Wild Wings and Chipotle. A story appearing in the Aug. 31 issue stated differently.
