Lehman art exhibit really speaks to you

Based on your March 23 critique of the Lehman College Art Gallery, I viewed the exhibit “Alien Nations.”

The art on display is emotionally gripping and challenges the visitor to think about the alienation and isolation of people who are left out of the mainstream. Particularly stirring is the set of three images of prayer shawls made from letters cut out of the Bible and Quran.

It asks without a common spoken or written language how clearly do we understand the viewpoint of other faiths? How do we develop empathy for people who do not look or sound like us?

Perhaps it is the role of the arts to help us process what is going on in our world, specifically today. How can we build a nation that is less divided?

Take the time to visit this gallery. Let the exhibit spark difficult conversations around you.
