Library too loud

Posted

To the editor:

I do not believe that public libraries require monastic silence. And I do believe that they serve a vital function in promoting literacy and learning, so youngsters certainly need to feel welcome.

But on weekdays between 2 and 5 p.m., teenagers routinely hang out in the Spuyten Duyvil Library socializing, arguing, flirting, yelling. This is disturbing to patrons like me who come to read or study or work on the computers.

Surely teenagers who are neither reading nor studying — and who are disturbing the peace — should be told to leave. I believe there is a security guard for that purpose.
