MÁSCARAS AFUERA” BY JOSELO ARROYO
TWO PERFORMANCES ONLY! / IN SPANISH WITH ENGLISH TRANSLATION A comedy to take your masks off
FUERZAfest - Latino LGBTQ Festival presented by the Hispanic Federation returns in May of 2017 on its second edition in New York. The festival will bring together members of New York City’s diverse LGBTQ communities, allies, and artists for a 12-day (May 10th-May 21st) celebration of Latino LGBTQ culture under the theme “Breaking Down Walls”.
MÁSCARAS AFUERA is one of the eight plays chosen to be part of this festival, a comedy by Joselo Arroyo written in 2005 and premiered at Teatro Coribantes in Puerto Rico in 2006 as part of the 1st Third Love Festival winning awards for Best Dramaturgy and Best Set Design. In 2006 and 2009 was presented in different occasions at festivals and theaters in Puerto Rico and Cuba, produced by Cuarzo Blanco, Inc. and directed by Adriana Pantoja with Miguel Diffoot and Julio Ramos in the cast, it has also been produced in Costa Rica by professional theater companies.
Arroyo wrote MÁSCARAS AFUERA (“Masks Off”) for male actors with a story about men. This year 2017, eleven years after its first opening night, it will be performed by actresses in an adaptation by and production of Edna Lee Figueroa.
Two childhood friends meet, in the radio station where one of them works, to confess secrets that make them take off their masks. Luisa is married, has a son, is an accountant, a bit reserved, and she recently "discovered" something with a man who changed her life. Marta is divorced, has a daughter who she lost contact with, is a DJ, is "promiscuous", and has many prejudices.
Does this look like a comedy to you? Well, it actually is; with a particular sense of humor. “Joselo and Gudiño have a very similar dry sense of humor. I love Joselo’s (Arroyo) plays, he wrote "Láyel" for me (monologue produced by Teatro Círculo in CALLBACKseries2015 and nominated for an HOLA-Hispanic Organization of Latin Actors Award and ATI-Independent Theatre Artists Award). I love to perform with Gudiño (he’s an actor too) and his style of directing, so exact and subtle.” -Figueroa said. This will be Gerardo Gudiño’s fifth directing credit in NYC.
MÁSCARAS AFUERA will have a very limited engagement of two performances: May Friday 19th at 7pm and Saturday 20th at 2pm, performed in Spanish with English translation. The festival divided the eight plays performances days by Programs A, B, C, and D. This comedy is part of Program D.
If you want to know what happened with their masks on that night where everyone was sleeping, at least that’s what it seemed, you’ll have to make your way to the Julia de Burgos Performance and Arts Center (1680 Lexington Avenue, 105 & 106 Street) because we can’ tell you, besides we’re also dying to know.
