New volleyball league on horizon from chaplains
The United Chaplains State of New York athletic league is creating a volleyball league for 150 students between 14 and 19, until Oct. 7.

Volunteers from the city’s police department, fire department and emergency medical services work as coaches and mentors to the students. The goal is to use sports to empower and instill confidence.

Regents board approves new learning standards

The Board of Regents has approved the state’s “Next Generation Learning Standards for English Language Arts and Mathematics,” replacing what has been considered controversial Common Core standards.

The new benchmarks are the result of a two-year collaboration between the state, educators and parents, according to the state’s education department. The upcoming academic year focuses on bringing awareness of the changes to schools.

The next two years focus on curriculum and professional development, with full implementation of the new standards beginning in 2020. Testing would start in 2021.

The New York State United Teachers union, which represents more than 600,000 members, applauded the changes, but said there was still more work to do when it comes to improving the education system.
