'Paterno' debuts April 7

HBO has finally set a date for when it will unveil Barry Levinson’s take on the Jerry Sandusky child molestation controversy.

“Paterno,” which focuses on the late Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, debuts on the premium cable channel April 7. Starring Al Pacino in the title role, some scenes for the movie were filmed in Riverdale last August.

It wasn’t clear what was filmed in the area, but parking around West 256th Street and Mosholu Avenue was cut off for three days.

At the same time, a Manhattan-based casting companies was looking for locals 18 and older to “portray press types and college students for background work.

Riverdale is no stranger to film and television. FX’s “The Americans” filmed a scene intended to take place in a Soviet-era playground last year, and earlier this month, “Law & Order: SVU” filmed at Wave Hill. Other shows that stopped by the area recently include “Sneaky Pete” for Amazon, “Seven Seconds” for Netflix, and “Elementary” for CBS.

Besides Pacino, “Paterno” also stars Kiley Keough, the granddaughter of Elvis Presley. She plays Sara Ganim, a young journalist who first reported the Sandusky molestation case. Both are joined by Kathy Baker, who plays Paterno’s wife, Sue.

Emmy nods for BronxNet

Animation is earning some accolades on BronxNet with the cable access channel’s “Get to Know the Bronx” earning two Emmy Award nominations by the New York chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

Since debuting last June, “Get to Know the Bronx” has provided detailed historical information on familiar and non-familiar Bronx places and people — all in a one-minute format.

So far, the series has explored Orchard Beach, Bronx parks, Poe Cottage, the Bronx Zoo, and the Piccirilli brothers — a Bronx family of stone carvers who crafted the Lincoln Memorial’s Abraham Lincoln statue and other great works in the early 1990s.

The Emmy nominations are in the categories of graphic arts and community public service series.

The show is produced by Aria Feliciano, an alum of Lehman College, with support by BronxNet graphics designer Christine Mariani and creative services director Marisa White.

BronxNet appears on channel 67 on Optimum, and 33 on FiOS.
