Real Broadway mess has started

(re: “Changes at Broadway have created a huge list of problems,” Nov. 15)

Following my Nov. 15 Point of View, unsafe changes to the southbound traffic lanes on Broadway approaching West 242nd Street and Manhattan College Parkway resulted in a serious three-car crash Monday, Nov. 19, at approximately, 3:15 p.m.

A southbound bus was unable to reach the bus stop at the West 242nd subway entrance, though it was not clear if the bus also was involved in the collision.

The New York Police Department responded, and ambulances were approaching as the driver who witnessed the damage had to turn around and proceed north to the Henry Hudson Parkway in order to drive south, because Broadway was closed completely at West 242nd.

The multiple, unintelligent, confusing roadway lines on Broadway are proving how stupid the concept was that orchestrated such dangerous patterns for drivers and bus riders. And pedestrians and bicyclists are not made safer by such stupidity.

Broadway must be returned to the safer straightforward two-lane road southbound to West 242nd as it has been until now. The bus bulb must be removed so that buses can pull over to the curb to discharge passengers safely at West 242nd, adjacent to the subway entrance.

Safety for drivers, bus riders, pedestrians and bicyclists must be paramount. Right now, it’s not.

EDITOR’S NOTE: According to the New York Police Department, there was a four-vehicle crash involving a Subaru and three Hondas near the 6300 block of Broadway around 2:30 p.m., on Nov. 19. A bus was involved, but experienced just minor damage, according to the report. No one was seriously injured, although some complained of pain. There are few other details on the accident, including whether or not the recent realignment of Broadway played a role, because the crash was not considered serious enough to warrant such an investigation.
