Sen. Klein needs to hold town hall

Posted

To the editor:

We are a group of constituents from Senate District 34 who are concerned about the Independent Democratic Conference’s role in the New York State legislative process under Sen. Jeffrey D. Klein’s leadership.

We appreciate the dialogue between politicians representing the range of political beliefs and/or convictions. Our main concern revolves around the IDC’s tendency to work closely with Republicans at the expense of the Democratic agenda, especially since many Republicans support the regressive policies of Donald J. Trump.

While the IDC claims to be instrumental in passing progressive legislation, the issues cited are the same issues supported by Democrats in general, such as the $15 minimum wage.

These are not normal times, and business as usual is not what we need. What we need is for Democrats to stand together for the basic principles of tolerance and equality. And, we need Democrats to stand together against any and all threats at the state and federal level that would derail the progressive agenda we voted for by supporting Democratic representatives.

Our group has been studying the voting record of the IDC, and we have many questions that we’d like to pose directly to Sen. Klein. Specifically, we’d like Sen. Klein to follow Mayor De Blasio’s and U.S. Rep. Engel’s examples of meeting with constituents in an open and well-publicized town hall so that we can ask our questions.

We also ask that the meeting be held in the evening or on the weekend to accommodate the schedules of those who work.
