Slain NYPD officer was Kingsbridge resident

A police officer killed in the line of duty early Wednesday morning was raising her family in Kingsbridge.

Miosotis Familia was shot while sitting in her marked New York Police Department vehicle at around 12:30 a.m., on Wednesday, near the corner of Morris Avenue and East 183rd Street.

The shooter, later identified as Alexander Bonds, 34, walked up to Familia's parked car while she was finishing paperwork, and shot at her head. Familia was rushed to Saint Barnabas Hospital in the West Bronx, where she later succumbed to her injuries.

"Based on what we know, it is clear that this was an unprovoked direct attack on police officers who were assigned to keep the people of this city safe," police commissioner James P. O'Neill said in an early morning statement.

Borough president Ruben Diaz Jr. called Familia, who worked in the 46th Precinct, a "dedicated servant to our city" and that the "news of her passing is incredibly tragic."

Gov. Andrew Cuomo also offered his condolences early Wednesday morning to Familia's family, as well as her fellow officers in the 46th Precinct.

"Law enforcement officers across New York put their lives on the line to protect and serve their communities," Cuomo said in a statement. "This horrific and senseless assassination is a devastating reminder of the risks these brave men and women face each day."

Familia's partner, who also was sitting in the car, immediately called for backup after the shooting. Those officers found Bonds a block away on Morris Avenue, where they said he drew a revolver. Police shot first, and Bonds was killed.

In that shooting, a bystander was struck by a bullet, police said. That person, who was not associated with Bond at all, is said to be in stable condition at a local hospital.

Familia has lived at Giles Place near Sedgwick Avenue for at least a few years, although police officials would not confirm her family was still there. She was quoted in an October 2014 Riverdale Press story about insects that resembled midges plaguing residents near the Jerome Park Reservoir.

"I ask all New Yorkers to keep our officer and her family in your prayers and in your thoughts," Mayor Bill de Blasio said during a morning press conference, according to transcripts. "She was on duty serving this city, protecting people, doing what she believed in, and doing the job she loved. And after this shocking and sudden attack, her fellow officers came to her aid immediately."
