Taking the 1 train this weekend won't be easy

Posted

If you're planning to take a trip into Manhattan this weekend using mass transit, you might want to work in some extra time.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is replacing switches along the 1 train line this weekend, which will affect trains coming in and out of Kingsbridge.

Beginning at 11 p.m. Friday, 1 trains are suspended in both directions between 96th and 137th streets. The train will operate in two sections — first between South Ferry and 96th Street, and then via the 3 train to and from Harlem/148th Street, and between 137th Street and 242nd Street-Van Cortlandt Park.

A free shuttle bus will run between 96th and 137th.

At the same time, uptown 1 and 2 trains will skip 79th and 86th streets. Straphangers will have to use downtown 1 and 2 trains to hit those stops by transferring at 79th or 86th streets. During that time, 2 trains run local from 96th to Times Square-42nd Street.

Regular service is expected to be restored by 5 a.m. on Monday.

If you were thinking about just taking a longer journey to the 4 train, that might not be the best approach either. Beginning early Saturday morning (and running through Sunday night at 10), Woodlawn-bound 4 trains skip 161st, 167th, 170th and 176th streets, as well as Mount Eden Avenue. Riders will need to transfer at Burnside Avenue or 149th Street-Grand Concourse to a Manhattan-bound 4 to hit those stops.

To complicate travel even more, 4 trains will operate every 16 minutes between 125th Street and Woodlawn between 7:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday, and 9:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Sunday, for track replacement. The last stop for some trains headed toward Woodlawn will be 125th Street.
