THE FORTUNE SOCIETY HOSTS FREE FILM SCREENING & PANEL DISCUSSION: RIKERS: AN AMERICAN JAIL

Join The Fortune Society on Wednesday, July 18th at 6:00 p.m. for a free film screening & panel discussion on the Bill Moyers documentary Rikers: An American Jail.

This film brings you face to face with individuals who have endured incarceration at Rikers Island. Their stories, told directly to the camera, vividly describe the cruel arc of the Rikers experience—from the shock of entry, to the extortion and control exercised by other incarcerated individuals, the oppressive interaction with corrections officers, the beatings and stabbings, the torture of solitary confinement and the many challenges of returning to the outside world.

The panel discussion following the film will be moderated by Khalil A. Cumberbatch, Fortune’s Associate Vice President of Policy, and will feature three of the individuals who appeared in the film:

Kathy Morse, an advocate on social justice issues, concentrating on incarcerated women and adolescents.

Ismael Nazario, a formerly incarcerated prison reform/social justice/human rights advocate currently working at The Fortune Society.

Barry Campbell, who describes himself as a “systems baby,” having experienced foster care, the juvenile justice system, incarceration at Rikers Island as a youth, and prison as an adult. Today, he serves as Special Assistant to the CEO and President.
